Boeing 727 runs out of runway in FSM capital

8:36 am on 17 May 2008

An Asia Pacific Airlines Boeing-727 cargo plane flight skidded off the

end of the short runway at Pohnpei in the Federated States of Micronesia yesterday.

The plane failed to stop before reaching the end of the 6,000-foot runway.

The aircraft's nose is lying in the shallow lagoon water just a few feet from the end of the runway.

The airline carries mail to and from islands in the FSM and the Marshall Islands, and also carries large volumes of yellowfin tuna to sashimi markets in Hawaii and Japan.

None of the crew was injured in the incident and there does not appear to be any serious damage to the aircraft.
