Fiji administration says it is responsible for security at foreign embassies

Australia's ambassador to Fiji says he is "deeply disappointed" that the interim government has rejected his request for Australian police protection in the wake of death threats.

James Batley says he is urging Suva to beef up his security after he received two death threats in two weeks.

Fiji's interim administration says the Ambassador's request was denied because the responsibility for the safety of diplomatic missions rested with it.

A detailed statement on the threats is expected from Police Commissioner Esala Teleni today.
