Authorities close down rat-infested restaurants in American Samoa

4:14 pm on 10 July 2008

The Department of Health in American Samoa says it closed down three restaurants in Fagaalu and Fagatogo because they were filthy and unsanitary.

The acting Chief of Environmental Services, Sigafili Leiato, says they saw rats during their inspections.

The Famous Restaurant and Gold Conda in Fagaalu and the old Alamoana restaurant in Fagatogo were closed Monday and Tuesday.

The owners have been given a list of what they need to clean up and replace before another inspection to determine if they can reopen.

The closed restaurants have not yet been cited for any violations.
