Digicel in line for Fiji licence today

3:36 pm on 11 July 2008

After months of negotiations, Fiji's newest mobile operator, Digicel is due to receive its operating licence today.

The Interim Minister for Industry, Tourism, Trade and Communications, Tom Ricketts, will hand over the licence to two Digicel representatives at the Fiji Islands Visitors Bureau's office in Nadi today.

Fiji Live reports the Communications Ministry confirmed this today, saying a news release will be issued later in the day.

Last February, the Government had approved a licence for Digicel to operate a mobile phone service in Fiji in October, bringing in competition to Fiji's monopolised mobile phone sector.

The parties were still sorting out details this week and the licence that was expected on Tuesday this week was deferred to today.

The two parties declined to say what issues were being sorted out.
