Strong earthquake hits Solomon Islands

1:14 pm on 29 July 2008

An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.1 has struck off Solomon Islands, but there have been no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

The undersea quake struck about 130 kilometres east of Kira Kira on San Cristobal island, and 370 kilometres east-southeast of the capital Honiara at a depth of 52 kilometres.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre in Hawaii did not issue an alert.

Last year, an 8.0-magnitude earthquake in the western Solomons triggered a tsunami which killed more than 50 people and displaced thousands.
