Solomons opposition clarifies motion to oust PM

7:17 pm on 31 July 2008

The leader of the opposition in Solomon Islands says a motion of no confidence has been lodged against the Prime Minister Dr Derek Sikua in part because of his alleged drunken behaviour.

Manasseh Sogavare says the motion came about at the request of Solomon Islanders who are fed up with high fuel and food prices.

He says Dr Sikua has also failed to keep his promises on the peace process and that the budget delivered nothing to the people.

In addition, Mr Sogavare says the Prime Minister's conduct has been unseemly for his position.

"The Prime Minister has actually fallen on the floor of parliament drunk, they had to carry him out. In fact drinking has been his real problem, he's given himself to excessive drinking. He has been like that before he became the Prime Minister and it got worse when he became the Prime Minister. That's an embarrassment to the country and in a democracy in other countries he would be asked to resign immediately."

Manasseh Sogavare says the motion looks likely to be tabled on Friday next week.
