Financial woes at Radio Kiribati lead to staff cuts

The national broadcaster in Kiribati has cut staff because of a shortfall in earnings.

Pacific Magazine reports that Radio Kiribati took the measure following a breakdown of the AM transmission network.

It quotes the acting manager, Tibwere Bobo, as saying that while the network is being repaired, a range of measures are being implemented.

These include laying-off all temporary staff, giving leave to permanent staff who haven't taken their leave, cut overtime and other allowances.

Radio Kiribati has maintained its FM transmission but that covers only South Tarawa and the Line and Phoenix group of islands.
