The parents of the man who allegedly led the attack on a New Zealand Police Officer serving with the Regional Assistance Mission on the Weather Coast of Guadalcanal have been arrested and charged by police.

The RAMSI Officer was attacked last week by a group of six men carrying machetes resulting in the officer receiving a serious leg wound.

The 68-year old father and 55-year old mother were charged with conspiring to defeat justice in relation to the harbouring of individuals already wanted by police for previous offences.

Their son is wanted by police for a 1999 murder on the Weather Coast.

Following last week's attack, Acting Commissioner of Police, Johnson Siapu, condemned the attack as cowardly and warned that family and friends providing protection to those wanted by police need to understand that this was also a crime and they will become part of the police investigation.
