Ousted PNG provincial governor questions decision on electoral petition

The ousted Governor of Papua New Guinea's Madang province says the grounds for a court decision to declare his election last year void are questionable.

The Court of Disputed Returns has overturned Sir Arnold Amet's election following an election petition filed last September by his defeated rival, Peter Yama.

Justice Bernard Sakora found that there was undue influence in statements made at four locations by Sir Arnold and others on his campaign team.

However Sir Arnold has questioned the petitioner's contention that his statements about polygamist marriages amount to undue influence because Mr Yama had two wives.

"Essentially speaking on moral, ethical principlies from my belief system frmo the bible about qualities of good leadership and I spoke about polygamist marriages and those were concluded to have amounted to undue influence which is very very surprising in a christian country such as ours."

Sir Arnold will consider applying for a review of the decision once Justice Sakora's final written judgement is given.
