Farmers and Mammas Association in Vanuatu wants ontrol of capital's market place

Vanuatu's co-operative association of mammas and farmers says the Government and the Port Vila Municipal Council should let them take over the capital's traditional Market House.

The association was set up about four months ago when the local council hiked rates by more than 50 percent for the women, 'the mammas' selling there.

The mammas and the farmers went on strike on that occasion, gaining a price cut to 450 vatu a day.

But chairman of the association, Joe Nocnan, says what they want is control of the Market House, which the mammas themselves created years ago.

"We want less than 450 - [perhaps] 200 vatu. We want the Vanuatu Government and the Municipal (Council) to give back the Market House to the farmer and mamma co-operative."
