The Fiji police say an eight-year old boy is the latest and youngest victim of suicide in the country.

According to the latest data, almost 170 people have taken their lives in Fiji in the past year, with about 40 percent of them under the age of 25.

A police spokesperson, Ema Mua, says the Indo-Fijian boy was found dead late last week.

"The eight year old is believed to have had this dislike for school and the parents wanted the child to go to school every day. But then the child was found when he missed school. Our reports show no foul play. But now we are looking into the social background of the child."

DUR: 16

Ema Mua says police attend to at least four attempted suicides per week and they are calling on all parents to have an open ear to the problems of their children.
