PNG tribal fight kills five in Eastern Highlands

Five Papua New Guinea villagers have been shot dead in a tribal fight, just days after government ministers visited the area urging an end to the fighting.

The dawn raid on Monday in a remote district of PNG's Eastern Highlands Province was between the Nagamie clan and Bogerigu clan in a fight that has been going on for years.

The newspaper, The National, says the deadly attack came despite a peace agreement being signed in late August last year.

The Eastern Highlands police commander Teddy Tei says five people were killed and two others are in Goroka Hospital with serious injuries.

Last Tuesday, the area's MP, Environment Minister Benny Allen, along with fellow highlander Transport Minister Don Poyle and Education Minister James Marape visited the district and urged an end to the fighting.
