Fiji's interim attorney general says Reserve Bank governor has not been sacked

Fiji's interim attorney general says the country's Reserve Bank governor has not been sacked, but his position no longer exists.

Aiyaz Sayed-Khayum says police have been at the Reserve Bank in Suva but it is not closed, and its governor Savenaca Narube has not been fired.

But he says as with all positions created under the constitution, the governor's position will now have to be re-established.

"The position of the Reserve Bank Governor no longer exists like the judicial appointments no longer exists, and they will exist under a state services decree once that's been put in place and then a governor of the Reserve Bank shall be appointed under that particular decree."

Aiyaz Sayed Khayum says there is an imperative to ensure a new governor is appointed so they can build an economically sound Fiji.
