PNG landslide zone remains risky

3:14 pm on 2 June 2009

Papua New Guinea's Morobe province disaster management office says people should avoid the area affected by last week's landslip as it's still unsafe.

Five people have been killed and 14 others are still missing following the landslide that also wiped out the foodgardens of a whole village.

The Morobe province disaster management office director, Roy Kamen, says the area is still dangerous.

"I went in there yesterday with the local member of parliament for the area. I have advised people not to go into the area, because the soil is really unstable there. We have advised people to go to higher ground where the main village is."

Roy Kamen says his team has distributed food and other items to the 21 families that survived the disaster.
