Guam's first locally produced Chamorro dictionary launched

Guam's first locally produced Chamorro dictionary is being launched Monday.

The dictionary presents Chamorro words with English definitions, grammatical notes and sentence examples in both Chamorro and English.

It is the first-ever made-on-Guam dictionary of the island's native language, as a Chamorro-English dictionary was published in 1975 by the University of Hawaii Press.

Debbie Quinata of the indigenous group, Nation Chamorros, says getting a dictionary for Chamorro people by Chamoro people is well overdue.

"There is a need for us to continue to teach and learn our culture and language in a written form so it can be passed forward. We are very grateful for all of the work put together by these fine people."

Debbie Quinata says a group of educators and elders worked for years to get the book published.
