CNMI views US Guantanamo policy unequitable

Reports from the Northern Marianas say the territory's delegate to the US Congress has written to President Barack Obama in protest at the apparent difference in US policy towards the American insular territories over the detainees now held in Guantanamo Bay.

Gregorio Sablan says the US spending bill passed last week bars the hosting of Guantanamo Bay detainees but he says this doesn't apply to the US territories, such as the CNMI.

He says the provision seems to mean that the US territories are not being given an equitable treatment.

The US plans to shut down the camp where for years it has been holding hundreds of Muslims considered to be a threat to the US state.

Earlier, the CNMI governor, Benigno Fitial, said he could consider accommodating Guantanamo detainees if they are law abiding and not terrorists.
