PNG Opposition launches stinging campaign over a Government it says is out of touch

A commentator in Papua New Guinea says a new advertising campaign by the Opposition shows the level of frustration MPs have with the Government's stalling tactics.

The Opposition, claiming the backing of a number of Government MPs, have issued a scathing critique of the Somare administration, alleging it is corrupt, incompetent and doesn't care about the people.

The Opposition, which was stymied in its attempt to bring a vote of no confidence in the Government late last month when Parliament was suddenly adjourned, suggests Prime Minister Sir Michael Somare is too old and out of touch.

Paul Barker, the executive director of the PNG Institute of National Affairs, says Opposition MPs have found it particularly difficult over the past year to be heard in Parliament.

"To be able to ask questions and get answers. I suppose this frustration is coming out now through trying to use other means of communication to ask their questions, to appeal to the public. It has been considered by a lot of people that over the last few years the impartiality of the chair in Parliament has been somewhat questioned."
