Guam on alert for Typhoon Melor

6:27 pm on 2 October 2009

A Typhoon warning is in place for Guam and forecasters say the approaching weather system could become a super-typhoon within the next 12 to 24 hours.

The storm is heading towards the Northern Marianas chain.

Ben Lowings reports from Guam.

"Typhoon Melor lies east of Guam and is expected to intensify. Typhoon force winds in excess of 70 knots are expected in the Northern Marianas chain. A Typhoon warning is in place for Saipan and Tinian. Residents of Guam and the Northern Marianas are being advised to monitor the storm closely. Supertyphoon Paka hit Guam in 1997 with the highest wind speeds ever recorded in history."
