It has been confirmed that a bid has been made to the French constitutional council to enforce a Tahiti court ruling to strip French Polynesia's Gaston Flosse of his Senate seat.
The council has to approve the termination of the mandate for the ruling to be effective.
Flosse was convicted for misuse of public funds last month when the appeal court in Papeete also ruled that he lose his mandates for a year.
His lawyer have appealed the ruling to France's highest court and say his Senate seat is safe at least until the Paris court has made its decision.
There is no deadline for the constitutional council to act but reports say it usually responds within a month.
The most recent case dates back to August when the council voided the mandate of a French MP who had been convicted in a corruption case.
