Flosse lawyer not surprised by Paris ruling

The Tahiti lawyer of French Polynesia's veteran politician Gaston Flosse says there was no surprise that the French Constitutional Council decided in his client's favour.

The Constitutional Council refused to enact last month's Tahiti appeal court decision which provided for Flosse to lose his seat as French senator and member of the French Polynesian assembly.

According to Tahitipresse, the lawyer, Francois Quinquis, says the Council agreed that the appeal process had not been exhausted as the conviction for misuse of public funds is now before France's highest appeal court whose decision is not expected before next year.

Mr Quinquis says he is still awaiting a response to his request to move the OPT probe away from Tahiti, citing excessive publicity and a lack of objectivity on the prosecutor's part in releasing information pertinent to the case.
