Solomons electoral commission short of funds

4:09 pm on 3 December 2009

Officials of the Solomon Islands Electoral Commission say it is short of funds as it is charged with organising next year's general election.

They say the awareness campaign for voter registration is yet to begin because of the lack of resources and funds.

This comes as the parliamentary accounts committee has been told by the Finance Department's Permanent Secretary, Shadreck Fanega, that government revenue has fallen drastically.

The Governor of the Central Bank, Denton Rarawa, says the government may have to borrow to meet the shortfall in revenue as a direct result of the global economic crisis.

The government's budget unit says the government is barely meeting its fortnightly salary bill.
