Kiribati eyes tourism boost with five-year plan

8:06 am on 8 December 2009

The Kiribati tourism minister, Temate Ereata, says the five-year plan for developing tourism has now been completed.

He says every sector related to tourism has a part to fulfill to make the plan for 2010 to 2015 a reality.

The plans targets five areas to be improved.

Kiritimati and Line and Phoenix cruising by passenger ships, the introduction of new tax reforms, improving sea and air transportation, and encouraging the business community to provide the necessary services for the tourists.

Mr Ereata says the government isn't planning for a mass in-flow of tourists, but has a target of ten thousand within five years.

He says the limited target is in order to protect the Kiribati identity and custom.
