American Samoa Governor calls on villagers to stop pestering aid workers

5:23 pm on 17 February 2010

The American Samoa Governor, Togiola Tulafono, says he is embarrassed that some villagers have pestered volunteers who are in the territory building homes for tsunami victims.

The Governor says volunteers from the Mennonites organization and the Southern Baptist Church have told him locals have asked them for money and building tools.

Togiola says both groups are providing free labour to build homes for families whose houses were destroyed or damaged in September's tsunami.

He says it is an embarrassment that people who are providing free labour are being treated in this way.
