Fiji public emergency restrictions extended again

7:03 pm on 24 May 2010

Fiji's Public Emergency Regulations have been extended for another 30 days from the end of this week.

The regulations have been in force since last April, when the constitution was abrogated and been extended a month at a time since then.

Fiji Live reports a government statement says the President, Ratu Epeli Nailatikau, has extended the PER through a gazette.

Eighteen Methodist Church ministers and a high chief are facing trial over charges related to the PER while several other members of the public have been arrested and later released under the document's provisions relating to civil unrest.
