Solomons expected to confirm August election date

1:26 pm on 22 June 2010

The date for the Solomon Islands general election is expected to be formally announced this afternoon.

The caretaker Prime Minister Derek Sikua has previously stated publicly that the election date will be August the 4th.

That means the Governor General's formal election proclamation must be gazetted today.

The Electoral Commission is expected to hold a media conference following the proclamation.

Our correspondent Dorothy Wickham says the Commission has experienced some difficulties, but its election preparations appear to be on course

"They have really struggled hard to get the finances out of government's coffers to ensure that they can carry out their administrative needs that they have to have in place to cater for this election. But I think based on what we've seen so far, it's on track."

Dorothy Wickham says the election announcement will open the period for candidate nominations, and campaigning will begin in earnest.
