The Governor of Papua New Guinea's National Capital District, Powes Parkop, is launching a political party, called the Social Democratic Party.
Mr Parkop says it'll be different from the typical PNG party in that it will be driven by ideas, not personalities.
Mr Parkop, who has been a long time human rights activist, went into Parliament in 2007 as an independent, but says he had always realised that to get things done he would need to work within a party, and this has spurred him to form one.
Mr Parkop says it'll be an activist party with links to the grassroots of PNG society, and will explore the connections between the concept of a social democratic party and Melanesian traditions.
He says social democracy is increasingly relevant in PNG and throughout the world.
"We have got to have everyone working together, you know the effect of global climatic change, for example, demands that all the social economic forces around the world have a common interest. There is a lot at stake that affects everybody irrespective of their socio-economic status."
