Clinton's PNG visit canvasses energy projects and climate change

Climate change and managing Papua New Guinea's resource riches were among the issues for discussion during the US Secretary of State's four hour visit to Port Moresby yesterday.

A statement from the US embassy says topics on the agenda for Hillary Clinton's meeting with the Prime Minister Sir Michael Somare included the energy governance and capacity initiative.

The US department of state-led programme aims to lend US technical support to the governments of selected countries on the verge of becoming the world's next generation of oil and gas producers.

The statement says the initiative will help PNG access US expertise on issues related to petroleum geology, upstream licensing, exploration and production operations, revenue management, sector regulation, policy reform and implementation, and energy sector finance and tax structure.

Mrs Clinton, who is now in New Zealand, will meet Prime Minister, John Key, this afternoon when the two are expected to sign the Wellington Declaration.
