Fiji police are investigating allegations of people impersonating government officials in an attempt to extort money.

The interim government has put out an advisory calling on the public to be alert.

The secretary of the ministry of information, Sharon Smith Johns, says it's been going on for some time with report of people impersonating government ministers or representatives of the government.

She says these people often ask unsuspecting individuals to deposit money into bank accounts to assist with issues such as land leases or disputes.
