Democrat candidate wins Tonga by-election

Tonga's by-election has been won by Falisi Tupou of the opposition Friendly Island Democratic Party.

Mr Tupou beat five other candidates to secure the Tongatapu Number Nine seat.

Matangi Tonga reports that turn-out was just over 70 percent.

Mr Tupou works for the Kele'a newspaper owned by the Pohiva family.

The by-election was called to fill the seat vacated by the late Kaveinga Fa'anunu who died recently.
