French Polynesian voters have given overwhelming support to Francois Hollande in the first ever primary contest by France's Socialist Party ahead of a presidential election.

The two top candidates will contest a run-off in a week.

France-wide Mr Hollande came out in front with just under 40 percent support ahead of Martine Aubry who secured just over 30 percent.

In French Polynesia, Mr Hollande won more than 60 percent while his former wife and the party's candidate in the 2007 contest, Segolene Royal, won 24 percent.

Ms Aubry won less than 10 percent support.

Tahitipresse reports that turnout was very poor at four percent.
