New Caledonia's government has proposed that the domestic airline introduce a 130 US dollar return fare for flights between the outer islands, the far north and Noumea.
The suggestion comes after last August's clashes near the airport on Mare island which led to four people being shot dead and many more injured.
The violence erupted after airports on Lifou, the Isle of Pines and Mare had been blockaded for more than a week in protest at fare increases by Air Caledonie.
The vice president, Gilbert Tyueinon, says the lowering of the air fares could be paid for by the provincial governments and cost about 10 million US dollars a year.
