Australia Fiji Business Council wants Canberra to ease sanctions

1:06 pm on 6 January 2012

The Australia Fiji Business Council has asked the Australian government to acknowledge the steps taken by Fiji in lifting the Public Emergency Regulations.

And the council has asked the Australian government to make some adjustments to the travel sanctions imposed on Fijians.

Fiji Live online says the Council president Greg Pawson made the call while welcoming the interim government's decision to lift the PERs on Saturday.

Mr Pawson said this a positive first step in moving Fiji in the right direction.

He says the Australian government said that the lifting of the PERs would, with some other steps, assist in moving bilateral relations onto a more normal footing.

He said the Australian government should make some adjustments to the travel sanctions on Fiji citizens to reduce the difficult impact they are creating for business and on families.
