A team from the South Pacific Animal Welfare group SPAW has established that contaminated chicken led to nearly 30 dogs dying in Tonga.

Recently a number of cats and dogs have been admitted to the SPAW clinic with various symptoms including tiredness and loss of appetite.

Radio Tonga says two vets were brought in from overseas and the team tested and treated more than 50 cats and dogs.

A New Zealand vet, Dr. Roz Holland, confirmed contaminated chicken, which had been repeatedly frozen, was the cause.

He is appealing to animal owners to give their pets proper food.
