O'Neill expected to get offered PNG PM job

2:36 pm on 1 August 2012

Reports from Papua New Guinea say Peter O'Neill is likely to be invited to form the next government this afternoon.

A spokesman for the Governor General Sir Michael Ogio says Mr O'Neill is expected to arrive at government house with as many as 80 out of 111 parliamentarians.

They are to witness the electoral commissioner Andrew Trawen present election writs to the Governor General.

Mr O'Neill will then be formally invited to form government, after which he is expected to be elected on the floor of parliament on Friday.

The announcement comes as Mr O'Neill's former deputy Belden Namah has taken out newspaper ads offering the job of prime minister if MPs form government with his PNG party.
