Police in American Samoa are investigating the death of retired police chief Malele Forsyth in a traffic accident at the weekend.

Territorial lawmaker, Larry Sanitoa, says his 72 year old friend was killed on Saturday morning in front of a store in Nu'uuli village after being hit by a bus, allegedly travelling at high speed.

Mr Sanitoa says Mr Forsyth was an avid walker.

Our correspondent in Pago Pago says a bus driver was taken into police custody following the incident.
