The director of American Samoa Hawaii Cable, Adolfo Montenegro, says the company is considering a second submarine fibre cable to serve the territory and it will most likely connect in Fiji.
He says they are also considering serving Samoa, but have so far not detailed any official offer to Samoa.
Mr Montenegro says initially the system may be setup for 10-40 gigabytes per second but may be designed for even higher capacities.
At a cabinet meeting last week, the American Samoa Governor Togiola cited the need to increase cable capacity and to eliminate the dependence on the Hawaii-American Samoa Cable among reasons for investing in the new venture.
He says internet usage had increased from 28 megabytes to 400 megabytes, and if usage continued growing at this rate, the cable will be out of bandwidth in two years.
