The newly elected president of Palau Tommy Remengesau says he is humbled by his win.

Mr Remengesau says his presidency is still to be formally certified and he will make a formal statement on Wednesday.

"Preliminary figures released last week showed Mr Remengesau had 6,140 votes, more than eighteen hundred 1,853 more than incumbent Johnson Toribiong."

Mr Remengesau says his win showed the desire for change and he describes it as a referendum on the last four years.

Mr Remengesau served two consecutive terms as president from 2001 to 2008.

He says he has a challenge ahead of him and there is much expectation that the new administration address the needs of Palau's grassroots.
