Fiji Labour Party opposed to Fiji flag change

12:57 pm on 4 January 2013

The Fiji Labour Party says the regime has no right to change the flag.

In a statement, the party has reacted to the New Year's address of the interim prime minister, Commodore Frank Bainimarama, who said he would be making further announcements this year about revamping the flag.

He said the change was aimed at reinforcing a new Fijian identity.

The Labour Party, however, questions what the need for the change is and wonders who has given the regime a mandate for this.

It says the current flag was adopted following nationwide consultations and a design competition.

It says it is not only symbolic but evokes deep sentiments for Fijians everywhere.
