The Papua New Guinea police commissioner, Tom Kulunga, has expressed grave concern over recent media reports of police brutality and has urged his senior officers to take control of the situation.
PNG police have issued a statement, with Mr Kulunga directing various commanders including Police Internal Affairs to immediately investigate the police brutality cases as reported by the media.
He expressed shame at what is being reported and announced measures to be taken with immediate effect to counter police brutality.
These include a ban on tint windows on police vehicles and the end of using unmarked vehicles.
The orders also include the reintroduction of discipline parades every Wednesday.
To report abuse by police, toll free numbers will be set up the mobile telephone numbers of the senior officers will be publsihed.
