Kiribati opposition criticises government over food supply delays

2:39 pm on 13 March 2013

A Kiribati opposition politician says the government needs to do more to avoid a shortage of basic food commodities as experienced across the entire nation last month.

The leader of Karikirakean Te I-Kiribati says while these cargoes have arrived, it does not mean that the government should sit back and relax.

Dr Tetaua Taitai says the public outcry published in local newspapers and broadcast over the radio over a three-week shortage period showed that it was the worst such problem he had ever seen.

He says the President and his ministers were not affected by the shortage of rice.

Dr Taitai says while the government blames the weather for the shipping delay, the opposition party considers it's the result of poor planning.
