Teachers across Solomon Islands have voted to strike from tomorrow after the government failed to meet its own commitments to pay outstanding wages.
The teachers went on strike earlier this year but in meetings in early February, they agreed to return to work after the government promised to pay the outstanding money in three installments over a four-week period.
The teachers union, the Solomon Islands National Teachers' Association, then gave the government until noon today to meet the agreement but this did not eventuate.
The union's president, Samson Faisi, says they are prepared to stay off the job for a long time.
"It will be for an indefinite period of time until the government responds positively to the teachers and to fully complete the 2012 arrears as well as the relevelling for all teachers."
