The American Samoa Department of Education says it has drastically cut travel and is relying on technology such as video conferencing to do its work without leaving Tutuila.
In its first 100 days in office report, the department says it has only paid for two off-island trips for staff.
It has also begun weekly inspections of schools to check for unnecessary lights or air conditioning units that have been left running in an effort to save around 30 thousand dollars.
The department also now requires teachers to stay in the classrooms during instructional time instead of going to training and other events, they are only now allowed to leave class in emergencies.
Also mentioned in the report is a new sexual harrassment and abuse policy aimed to deal with inappropriate student-teacher relationships.
