Charges against some Nauru asylum seekers dropped

1:24 pm on 30 July 2013

21 of the 152 asylum seekers arrested following a riot at the Nauru detention centre 11 days ago have had charges against them dropped.

They had been charged with rioting and unlawful assembly.

The violent riot destroyed the camp and caused an estimated 55 million US dollars in damages.

The Nauru District Court is progressively laying charges against the remaining asylum seekers, who will remain in police custody until at least next week.
