The French Polynesian president, Gaston Flosse, says he has been assured by the French authorities that there is no risk of radioactive leaks at the former French nuclear weapons test site in Moruroa.
In a statement issued after a one-day visit to the atoll with top officials, the president says although slight movements of the atoll are being measured since testing ended, the assessment is that the risk of an atoll collapse is practically nil.
It says the monitoring system installed in the 1980s needs to be repaired, which is a three-year job that the president would like to be given to French Polynesian companies.
The president says the atoll is in good shape and he was struck by the beauty of its forests.
The atoll is a no-go zone excised from French Polynesia by Paris - 17 years after the last weapons test.
