The American Samoa Department of Education has established a partnership with a non-profit senior citizens group to help youngsters in public high schools.

The education director, Vaitinasa Dr Salu Hunkin-Finau, says the partnership with Toe Afua Mai Matua, followed a meeting last week which about 60 members of the organisation attended.

Vaitinasa says the high school students will benefit.

"We believe that their effective way of counselling using cultural techniques or methods that they have as grandparents or parents, in the school, we know that they'll be able to touch the hearts of young people to remind them of values that they should remember."

Vaitinasa says the Toe Afua Mai Matua members will help students who need counselling and help with their relationships with their schools and other students.
