Potential in Niue to develop hydroponic farming

4:24 pm on 31 October 2013

The Agriculture Ministry in Niue says there is potential to develop hydroponic farming on the island.

The Minister Teariki Heather says the practice of growing plants, such as lettuces and cucumbers in liquid nutrient solutions rather than in soil, could reduce the country's heavy dependence on imported produce.

A hydroponics farmer, James Douglas, who began his business Niue Fresh just over two years ago says he is preparing to expand his farm because he cannot meet the demand for his produce.

"Besides us there's only one other hydroponic on the island and he's not as big as us but he's trying his best as well to supply the community. Between the two of us we're still well short of market supplies but we're not increasing for nothing. We're increasing to try to meet that demand."

James Douglas says he is currently supplying vegetables to a handful of restaurants, retailers and the Matavai resort and hopes to one day export his goods overseas.
