Cyclone Lusi, which has been hitting islands in Vanuatu's northeast, has now been upgraded to a category 2 storm as it heads east south east towards Fiji.
The Fiji Met Office has already issued a cyclone alert for the Yasawa and Mamanuca group of islands, the west of Viti Levu, Kadavu and close by islands.
It predicts that by Wednesday afternoon Lusi could be upgraded to a Category 3.
The Office says on its current tracking Lusi does not pose any direct threat to Fiji but they are warning people in coastal communities to make the necessary preparations.
The cyclone now has winds near its centre of up to 130 kilometres an hour as it approaches Pentecost.
Vanuatu forecasters are predicting heavy rainfall and big seas with damaging gale force winds today affecting Southern Torba, Penama, Sanma and Malampa provinces.
Strong winds are foreast for SHEFA province.
The director of the Vanuatu Disaster Management Office, Shadrack Welegtabit, says information about damage is hard to come by while the cyclone is still over the country.
"We're getting a bit of information about damages to crops. We're also getting information about damage to some of the locally made houses from local material. Some reports coming in of flooding on some islands"
