12:31 pm on 17 March 2014

The Solomon Islands government says a plan to reconstruct the main Honiara Highway to reduce traffic congestion and improve pedestrian safety has reached its final stages.

The Permanent Secretary for Infrastructure Development, Moses Virivolomo, says project officials have identified five major components to the project.

They include the reduction of traffic congestion at the Central Market, improving pedestrian access, re-designing the Honiara City Council roundabout, and widening the New Mataniko Bridge from two to four lanes.

The Ministry of Infrastructure says it will undertake public consultation on the 20th of March to present a draft design of the project.

It says it hopes to hear the views of the public, private sector and trade associations.
