Tahiti appeals for French financial support

2:47 pm on 16 October 2014

French Polynesia's president, Edouard Fritch, has appealed to France's financial solidarity to help sustain the health care system.

Mr Fritch has been in Paris and met the prime minister, Manuel Valls, who has reportedly promised to find a solution to the problem by the end of the year.

He says there are concrete considerations, but technically the envisaged solutions have not been finalised.

Mr Fritch also wants France to help the territory cope with the fall-out of the increase in unemployment as French Polynesia never introduced the benefits available to the jobless in other parts of France.

The French Polynesian president has also announced that Mr Valls will visit Tahiti next year.

Earlier this week, it was announced that President Francois Hollande would also visit French Polynesia next year.
