Vanuatu police investigate MP claims

6:57 pm on 19 November 2014

Vanuatu's acting police commissioner says police have a duty to investigate all complaints and they will look into allegations of millions being paid to MPs.

Aru Maralau says allegations over 350 thousand US dollars was placed in a private bank account to be paid out to government MPs prepared to switch to the opposition, are being investigated.

The office of the prime minister has complained about the allegations prompting the investigation and Mr Maralau says it is right for police to look into it.

"The police are placed in an awkward position. They are our leaders but we have a duty to all citizens. The police must seen to be impartial and to deal with the issues, find the facts around issues, confirm those allegations, [or] if not. That is their job."
